Brushes
-
Quality brushes are the most essential tools in a makeup artist's kit. Natural brushes are supreme, but synthetic brushes can work as long as they are a nylon blend, which creates a smooth finish that mimics the work of the natural variety. Be sure you also have brush cleansing solution to regularly sanitize brushes.
Foundation
-
Foundation for all skin colors is crucial. You do not want to scramble for foundation at the last second and risk a client feeling awkward. Pack your supplies with at least four shades of foundation (fair, medium, tan and dark) and mix to achieve the perfect color until you're able to acquire more shades.

Color
-
Lip, cheek, and eye color are important. Start with neutral colors and build up, depending on your clientele. Some will ask that you use their own makeup when it comes to shadows and blushes. Eye liner should be layered for long staying power, so a cake liner is also helpful.
Skin Care
-
You need a mild cleanser or makeup wipes to remove a client's makeup or to clean up any mishaps. These do not have to be expensive, but they should not be greasy. Also, have a lightweight moisturizer on hand and primer to make your work last.
Storage
-
Keep makeup in a large makeup kit. A steel version is best, but until you can afford one (they usually cost $100-plus), use a plastic storage kit that has foldout trays for easy access when you're working on a client.
