What Is a Paraffin Bath Treatment?
If you are living with chronic aches and pains in the hands, elbows or feet you may find relief with a paraffin bath. At one time they were only available in physical therapy centers and hospitals. Today you can buy units to use at home. Paraffin baths are considered a "natural" treatment as they are drug free. You can use them to treat arthritis, stiff joints, muscle spasms and dry or cracked skin. Does this Spark an idea?

Identification
-
A paraffin bath consists of a container holding paraffin wax, which is able to absorb and retain heat. The heat is transferred to your hand, foot or joint as you submerge it in the melted wax.
Instructions
-
The hand, foot or joint is dipped into the melted wax covering as much of the area as possible. Dipping more than once fully covers the affected area and creates several layers. The wax cools and forms a warm "glove" or covering around the area.
-
Benefits
-
As you allow the coating to remain on the affected area, the heat improves circulation, relaxes tight muscles and reduces inflammation. Skin may also be smoother and softer.
Considerations
-
Cover the area with a plastic bag, glove, boot or towel so the wax will not lose heat as quickly. Using a paraffin bath before exercising can also help to loosen stiff joints making exercise easier and less painful.
Features
-
Some companies (see Resources) sell wax in a variety of scents. This can help to add an aromatherapy component to your treatment. Most come with internal thermostats to maintain an even and safe temperature.
