Facts on Office Recycling

Businesses can recycle a wide variety of products, including electronics, paper, bottles, cans and light bulbs. This reduces the need for landfill space, virgin materials and energy. Businesses can save money by recycling in some cases.

Types

Most offices recycle cardboard, office paper and soda cans and bottles. Some also recycle fluorescent light bulbs, printer ink cartridges and electronics.

Significance

In most states it is the law for businesses to recycle at least paper and cardboard. Check with your municipality's Department of Environment or Natural Resources for details.

Effects

The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates that between 35 and 45 percent of municipal solid waste is commercial (businesses, schools and institutions). By increasing recycling at offices, the amount of waste going to landfill and incineration can be significantly reduced. This can save businesses money, as many of the waste collection businesses offer credits for recycling, thus lowering the trash bill.

Considerations

Not only can businesses recycle at the end of life of a product, they can also buy products made from recycled materials. In some states, there is a tax credit for doing this. In most states and the federal government, agencies are required to purchase products made with recycled content.

Potential

Getting employees to recycle at work can encourage them to recycle at home as well. Since 65 percent of municipal solid waste is residential, that can have a positive long-term impact on the environment.
