Is Vicodin Addictive?

Vicodin is a common pain reliever prescribed by doctors following injuries and surgical procedures. The opiate is highly addictive and withdrawal from the drug is similar to withdrawal from morphine or heroin. Vicodin often comes under the labels of Hydrocodone, Lorcet and Lortab.

  1. Effects

    • Vicodin produces a euphoric feeling when taken. Both the mind and the body become relaxed to relieve pain.

    Side Effects

    • Vicodin inhibits the production of natural endorphins, which is one of the precursors to addiction as the body develops a dependence on the drug to function properly.

    Signs

    • Signs of addiction include taking more than prescribed, visiting multiple doctors for refills and irritability when the user runs out.

    Denial

    • Because it is a prescription, those who become addicted can remain in denial when it has become a problem, saying they need the drug for pain.

    Withdrawal

    • People withdrawing from Vicodin addiction should be watched for elevated blood pressure and heart rate and often enter treatment for detoxification.

    Overdose

    • When taken in large quantities or in combination with other prescriptions, Vicodin can be fatal.
