The Causes of Asbestosis
Asbestosis is a growing cause of concern among people of the Asbestos Era when the cancer-causing material asbestos was used widely in materials to constructing homes and larger buildings from the early 1950s up until the mid 1980s. Asbestos was used widely in fire-resistant products made before 1980.
-
Features
-
Asbestosis is a respiratory illness caused by long-term exposure to the fibrous material asbestos.
Significance
-
People working in the construction field working in buildings constructed before 1980 are at a high risk for asbestos exposure and asbestosis.
-
Warning
-
Construction workers are not the only ones at risk for asbestosis. Anyone living in a home constructed before 1980 could be at risk for asbestos exposure and asbestosis, especially if the home is being renovated.
Symptoms
-
The first symptom of asbestosis is usually shortness of breath following exercise or other intense physical activity. Others symptoms of asbestosis include an overall feeling of illness (malaise) or a persistent dry cough.
Time Frame
-
Most people who are exposed to asbestos don't show any symptoms right away. It can take from 10 to 40 years for asbestosis and related symptoms and cancers to develop in exposed individuals.
Prevention/Solution
-
You can prevent asbestos exposure by knowing what materials in your home could be made of asbestos and also by wearing proper protective equipment if you're working in a high-risk environment.
