Different Motivation Theories

Motivation theories all revolve around one idea -- finding the inner psychological reason that will cause a person to act. Whether an employer wants to motivate employees to increase sales, a teacher is looking for ways to motivate students to study or a spouse wants to motivate her partner to clean the house, a motivation theory that is effective is vital.

  1. Rewards

    • The reward system has long been used for motivation, on the theory that money and gifts will cause people to take certain actions.

    Praise

    • Many people employ praise as a means to motivate others, acting on the idea that humans need approval.

    Logic

    • Once people understand the consequences of their actions, they can be motivated to act in a specific manner on the theory that they will ultimately get what they want.

    Dreams

    • Knowing the ultimate dreams and goals of others can provide a definitel basis on which to motivate them, creating pay-offs that coincide with those inner desires.

    Mobs

    • "Mob mentality" is a motivational theory that works on people who crave acceptance and long to be a part of a movement.
