All dogs shed but to varying degrees. Some breeds shed more than others. The only exceptions are dogs that are completely hairless. Dogs shed as the seasons change to grow coats to accommodate the warmer or colder weather. Grooming is important to keep the shedding under control. By grooming your dog regularly you will find less shed hair on your furniture, carpet and clothes. There are many brushes, combs, and tools available to assist you with your grooming routine.

    Seasonal Shedding

  1. In the spring your dog will shed its winter coat at the same time it grows lighter summer fur. In the fall the light coat comes off as it grows in a heavier winter coat.
  2. Shedding by Breed

  3. Some breeds are light shedders, such as poodles, while others, like German shepherds, shed a great deal all year long. If you have one of the breeds that don't shed as much, you will need to have them clipped or trimmed regularly because they are losing less hair.
  4. Undercoat

  5.
Certain dogs have an undercoat that adds to the nature shedding process during the seasonal changes. You will notice an abundance of fur from these dogs. Some examples are collies and Samoyeds.
  6. Shedding Tools

  7. There are many shedding tools available to assist you in removing the loose hair before it falls out in your house. There are several types of shedding rakes as well as a wide variety of brushes and combs. There are also gloves with rubber nubs on them that help remove the fur when you rub them on your dog. You should purchase one according to the type of fur on your dog.
  8. Tips

  9. Brushing your dog every day will help keep its shedding under control. Bathing loosens the shedding fur, so as soon as it is dry you should give it a thorough brushing.
  10. Warning

  11. In some cases, heavy shedding can be a sign of some type of problem such as skin allergies, parasites or other health issues. You should be aware of your dog's normal shedding patterns so you are alert to any changes. Consult your veterinarian if you are unsure.
