About Canadian Pacific Railway

The vast Canadian Pacific Railway has served Canadians with cross-country train transportation, including both freight, its primary function, and a variety of passenger services, since 1885. Shipping everything from coal, chemicals and automobiles (both parts and assembled), the railway also provides transportation for travelers, whether it be commuter service or luxury rail transportation.

History

The Canadian Pacific Railway was built in the four years between 1881 through 1885, forming Canada's first transcontinental line.

Geography

Montreal is the easternmost extension of the Great Pacific Railway, which runs to Vancouver; rail service also includes such United States cities as New York, Washington and Chicago.

Types

Freight trains carrying industrial products, including chemicals, coal, automobile parts, as well as natural products such as wheat and lumber, make up the freight business. Commuter trains form part of the passenger service, along with luxury train cars available to tourists.

Fun Fact

A number of luxury hotels were originally created by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, making for an enhanced travel experience for tourists.

Significance

Over 15,000 workers make up the employee network of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
