Bleach
-
Chlorine bleach will kill mold, though it will discolor most carpets. If discoloration is not a concern, it can be applied full strength to a very moldy area, or mixed one part bleach with one part water and sprayed on topical mold. The solution should sit for about 15 minutes.
Vinegar
-
A solution of one part vinegar and one part water can be sprayed over mold and left 30 minutes to kill it. Then brush the area with a stiff cleaning brush and wipe the area clean with a damp rag.
-
Borax
-
Mix enough water with Borax to make a paste, and spread it on topical mold. Leave it to set overnight. Then brush it off and wipe the area clean. This method is best for topical mold problem, but will not work as well if the mold is embedded deep in the fibers.
Shock Wave
-
For more stubborn mold, Shock Wave is an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved mold killer and cleaning agent. Shock Wave should be diluted and used according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Considerations
-
Protect yourself whenever tackling a mold problem by ensuring your arms, legs, feet, or any part of your body that might come into contact with mold is covered. Use protective gloves and a dust mask as well, and make sure the area is well ventilated. Be sure the carpet dries thoroughly after treatment, and use a dehumidifier if possible.
