Signs & Symptoms of Job Stress

Having, holding and being happy in a job is a job in itself. The daily pressures of a job can certainly cause myriad symptoms and have a truly adverse effect on one's health. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of job stress are important for overall health. Job stress can take its toll on one's mental, physical and even spiritual well-being.

  1. Causes

    • If you are suffering from job stress, it is imperative to figure out what is causing the stress and then finding a way to cure or cope with it. Working late, working long hours, bringing work home and forgoing vacations all lead to job stress. A difficult boss, an ornery co-worker, the threat of layoffs or working in the wrong job all cause job stress.

    Physical and Emotional Signs

    • The most obvious sign of job stress is job dissatisfaction. This can lead to sleep disturbances, mood swings, upset stomach, headaches, teeth grinding, low self-esteem, depression and relationship problems.

    Chemical and Other Dependency

    • Some people who battle with job stress try to mask it by abusing drugs or alcohol. They may turn to nicotine, caffeine, sugar, food or other addictions.

    Absenteeism

    • When you find your self calling in sick, missing work, coming in late, leaving early and genuinely not caring about your job, the stresses at work are quite often to blame. When a weekend break, a vacation, or a holiday do not alleviate that dreading feeling of coming into work, it is time to reevaluate your position.

    Long-Term Problems

    • Knowing when to pack it in at a stressful job can have an immediate positive result. Long-term effects of staying in a stressful job include psychological disorders and musculoskeletal and cardiovascular diseases.

    Words to Live By

    • Consider the words of Confucius: Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.
