What Vitamins Are in Broccoli?

Broccoli comes from the Brassicaceae family of vegetables, also called the crucifers. That family also includes the cabbage, turnip, horseradish, cauliflower and others. Besides being a good source of fiber, broccoli contains glucoraphanin, which scientists process into sulforaphane, an anti-cancer compound. The benefits of this are greatest in raw broccoli. Broccoli also contains many vitamins necessary for a healthy body.

  1. Vitamin C

    • Vitamin C is necessary to synthesize collagen and is an important antioxidant. Vitamin C helps absorb iron and metabolize amino acids.

    Vitamin A

    • Vitamin A helps build strong bones and teeth. It is important in vision, reproduction and immunity.

    Folic Acid, Vitamin B9

    • Vitamin B9, folate, helps in new-cell creation and DNA synthesis.

    Vitamin K

    • If you don't have enough vitamin K, your blood doesn't clot correctly. Surgery for people with deficiencies is extremely dangerous since they could bleed to death.

    Vitamin B2, Riboflavin

    • RIboflavin is good for your vision and skin. It also aids energy and metabolism.

    Vitamin B6, Pyridoxine

    • Vitamin B6 is necessary to the production of red blood cells. It also aids in metabolizing fats and proteins.
