Basic Definition of Neodymium

Neodymium, which was discovered in 1885 by Baron Carl Auer von Welsbach in Austria, is an element of the rare earth metals group.

This very strong metal was extracted by the electrolysis of salts. Neodymium metal is used for several different purposes, which help to define it.

  1. Magnets

    • Magnets are often made of neodymium. Neodymium magnets are stronger, weigh less and are less expensive than most other magnets.

    Coloring Use

    • Colored glass and many ceramics receive their coloring from neodymium.

    Infrared Radiation Filtering Use

    • Infrared radiation filters are made with neodymium to control the degree of infrared radiation allowed to pour through the lens of a laser.

    Color

    • Neodymium is a silvery-white to yellowish color. It is sensitive to oxidation. Exposure to air changes the coloring to a degree.

    Shape

    • This metal is naturally hexagonal in shape.

    Availability

    • This is not a rare metal. There is an abundance of neodymium available for use. 39 ppm of our planet's crust is made of neodymium.
