Spanish wedding cookies, also known as Mexican wedding cookies, are small cookies popular at Mexican weddings. They were known to be served at the end of Spanish weddings because of the belief that rich and sugary foods should be served last after the wedding meal. They have also grown to be a popular cookie at Christmas and other holidays.

History

Spanish wedding cookies originated with the Medieval Arab culture and from there spread to the Europeans and on to Spanish cultures. Spanish Wedding cookies first appeared in The United States in the 1950s

Types

Spanish wedding cookies usually come in three kinds of shapes .They are the traditional round shape, a small flatter round shape and a crescent shape.

Features

Spanish wedding cookies are covered in powdered sugar most of the time, but there are also non-powdered versions. These cookies are a small size and often feature bits of nuts baked into them, usually almonds or pecans.

Serving

Traditionally when served at weddings, Spanish cookies are placed in a net with a bow tied around the net. They are also sometimes placed four to a small net and placed inside wine glasses.

Significance

The ingredients of a Spanish wedding cookie traditionally are the richest butters, sugars and oils to signify blessings for a rich and full married life. The powdered sugars are said to have at one time represented purity.
