Adverse Effects of Soy Products

Soy was once considered to be the perfect food with many different uses and possible health benefits. However, recent research indicates that soy consumption is contributing to increased risk of cancer, adverse effects on the thyroid and digestive issues. Soy allergies have been on a steady rise. Those effected by soy allergies or intolerance experience symptoms such as digestive issues and even anaphylaxis.

  1. History

    • Soy was used by the ancient Chinese culture. Even then, it was not used frequently, and only eaten if it was fermented (such as in soy sauce), which destroyed the toxins. Even today, the Chinese and Japanese only consume small amounts of soy products (such as tofu).

    Forms

    • Soy is contained in many different foods. It is very widely used in processed foods. Forms of soy include, soy sauce, tofu, vegetable oil (most vegetable oil is soy oil), soy flour and TSP (textured soy protein). In its natural state, the soy bean is called edamame.

    Effects

    • Soybeans can have varying degrees of negative effects on the human body. Mild reactions include digestive issues, hives or other allergic reactions. Scientists have recently uncovered further information showing that the consumption of soybeans or soybean products can cause an increased risk of cancer, impair proper thyroid function, cause premature sexual development and infertility.

    Function

    • Soybeans have isoflavones, which in turn act as phytoestrogens (a form of estrogen) in the body. Increased levels of phytoestergens can effect proper endocrine functions, infertility issues and premature sexual development.

    Considerations

    • Another issue relating to the soybean crop is that more than 50 percent grown is genetically modified. This means that the soybean plants have been modified by changing the DNA, or genes, of the plant. This was done to help grow produce that was more resistant to disease, rotting, resistance to herbicides in addition to enhancing flavor. However, the effects to the human body of consuming GM plants, such as soybeans, is unclear.

    Warning

    • Soy infant formula can be detrimental to a child's development. Remember, soy contains a form of estrogen. So feeding a baby soy formula, is like feeding the baby five birth control pills a day.
