About the Causes of Stress

Stress is a leading factor in disease and the development of psychological and emotional issues. Whether the cause of stress is presumed or actual, minor or acute, help is available for those who have difficulty dealing with it. (See Resources below.)

  1. Finances

    • Financial problems are a leading cause of stress, such as not having enough money for necessities like food and rent or mortgage payments, or to meet unexpected emergencies such as illness or repairs.

    Employment

    • Difficulty with a harsh or excessively demanding employer, problems with coworkers, being overworked or forced to remain at a hated job because of financial burdens are all situations conducive to stress.

    Relationships and School

    • Problems forming relationships or friendships due to a lack of self-confidence, pressure to finish a paper or project, being unprepared for exams and struggling to maintain a grade that exceeds capability are primary causes of stress among students.

    Family

    • Causes of stress within the family can arise from marital problems, dealing with difficult children, caring for a member of the family who is ill, separation, divorce or the death of a loved one.

    Trauma and Illness

    • Stress is caused by the trauma of becoming a crime victim or witnessing a crime, being a wartime member of the armed services and others whose lives are affected by war and violence. Those afflicted with major illnesses may also develop severe cases of stress. (See Resources below.)
