What Training Is Needed to Become a Lawyer?

To practice as an attorney you must have a juris doctorate, or law degree, and then pass a bar examination in your state. The most successful lawyers also have expertise in an area related to their field of legal practice--such as immigration, taxes or patents. Generally, prospective lawyers will get a bachelor's and/or master's degree in their specific area of interest before attending law school.

  1. Bachelor's Degree

    • Before you attend law school, you need a bachelor's degree.

    Law School

    • To become a lawyer, you must complete a juris doctorate, or J.D., which takes 3 years' full-time study.

    Bar Exam Preparation

    • Before you practice law, you must pass a state bar examination. Preparation for the test typically takes about a year, which can be completed while attending law school.

    CLE

    • Every year, practicing attorneys must complete several hours of continuing legal education (CLE). The specific amount of CLE credit hours required varies by state.

    Clerkships

    • Most law students complete a clerkship as a capstone to their legal education. Law students may clerk with judges, government agencies or private firms.
