Herpes Sores Symptoms

Herpes is a contagious medical condition that is caused by a virus. There are eight different types of herpes viruses. According to the Mayo Clinic, 90 percent of herpes sufferers are not aware they have the condition. Both genital and oral herpes can be spread sexually.

  1. Types

    • Some sufferers have no symptoms. Symptoms can range from mild to blisters that are very painful.

    Time Frame

    • The first signs of genital herpes might be itching or pain in the genital area, normally beginning a couple of weeks after infection.

    Identification

    • Genital herpes can appear as small red sores or blisters in the genital area. They can cause pain and itching in the genital, buttock and thigh areas.

    Features

    • The sores can be grouped in clusters.

    Effects

    • After the blister stage, the sores can break open and form mucous membranes. These become crusty scabs that eventually fall off.

    Cold Sores

    • Cold sores are caused by a herpes virus and appear on the mouth.
