Effects of Alkalinity

Effects of Alkalinity

Alkalinity is the buffering capacity that any particular body of water can tolerate before the water becomes dangerous for drinking, skin contact, marine life and plant life sustenance.

The level of PH in the water is maintained by the proper amount of alkalinity. The appropriate alkalinity differs depending on what the water's use is.

  1. Marine Life

    • Underwater organisms depend upon the right alkalinity for life.

Aquatic life depends upon the alkalinity in the water's being appropriate to sustain it. If too much acid waste or rain enters the water stream at once, the buffering capacity is used up, and the results are demonstrated quickly by sickness and death. Fish often die when alkalinity levels are too low, even just for one hour. The lower alkalinity level creates too much ability for rapid fluctuation of PH levels.

    Plant Life

    • Low alkalinity is best for houseplants and outdoor plants.

Plants need appropriate alkalinity levels in order to survive also. If alkalinity is too high, plants do not survive.

    Plumbing

    • Pipes can become corroded.

Alkalinity of water running through pipes should not be too low because these will corrode if PH is allowed to become too acidic. This would allow the infusion of lead and copper into the drinking water supply.

    Well Water

    • Well water is affected.

Nutrients are increased in well water with the right alkalinity.

    Water for Bathing

    • Bathing water is affected.

Low alkalinity in bathing water may remove too much oil from human skin.
