What Are the Requirements for an ASE Certification?

Many automotive professionals want to become ASE certified. This can improve a mechanic's employment opportunities and potential for advancement in the workplace. According to ase.com, many ASE-certified professionals get salary increases based on certification and are in high demand in the U.S. An automotive mechanic must prove competency in his field to become ASE certified.

  1. Work Experience

    • You must have at least 2 years' experience in the automotive service field. An applicant may substitute 2 years' specialized schooling for a year of work experience.

    Study Guides

    • ASE study guides are available to help auto mechanics prepare to take the tests. These guides can be downloaded online or obtained in print versions.

    Tests

    • There are more than 40 ASE specialty tests. An applicant must pass one or more tests and provide 2 years' work experience to become certified.

    Where to Test

    • ASE certification tests are administered twice a year by ACT. There are testing locations throughout the United States. The tests are offered in the summer and winter.
