- At a minimum, you should change your toothbrush every 3 months. Keep extras on hand and make a note to open a new one on your calendar so you don't forget.
- Germs linger on toothbrushes. Discard yours for a fresh one if you used it while you were under the weather.
- If the bristles of your toothbrush look worn and out of shape even before 3 months have passed, go ahead and replace it early.
- Some brands of toothbrushes have indicator bristles that alert you when it's time for a new one. Even if it looks okay, still follow the 3-month rule.
- Your dentist has a view of your teeth and brushing habits that you don't. If your dentist recommends a change, it is time to replace your toothbrush.
- Sharing toothbrushes sounds romantic and chummy, but it isn't ideal. Opt for a new one before you brush again and buy a few extra for the future.
