How Do Amish Men Dress?

The Amish culture is one of simplicity. They refer to themselves as "plain" for a reason. Their fashion is actually based on the absence of fashion. An Amish man dresses in a plain manner in order to focus solely on his relationship with God and not on his appearance.

Suits

Amish men wear straight-cut suits, called mutza suits. Amish suits and coats have no collars, lapels or pockets. Such adornment is considered frivolous. Coats and vests fasten with a hook and eye.

Pants

Amish men do not have creases or cuffs in their pants. They hold up their pants with suspenders instead of belts. Pants are fastened with a button instead of zippers.

Shirts

Amish men wear handmade shirts that fasten with buttons. Their shirts are a poly/cotton blend.

Hats

In the winter, Amish men wear black felt hats. In the warmer months, Amish men wear straw hats.

Colors

Strict Amish sects require Amish men to wear only black clothing. More progressive sects allow colored shirts.
