How Do Amish Men Dress?

The Amish culture is one of simplicity. They refer to themselves as "plain" for a reason. Their fashion is actually based on the absence of fashion. An Amish man dresses in a plain manner in order to focus solely on his relationship with God and not on his appearance.

  1. Suits

    • Amish men wear straight-cut suits, called mutza suits. Amish suits and coats have no collars, lapels or pockets. Such adornment is considered frivolous. Coats and vests fasten with a hook and eye.

    Pants

    • Amish men do not have creases or cuffs in their pants. They hold up their pants with suspenders instead of belts. Pants are fastened with a button instead of zippers.

    Shirts

    • Amish men wear handmade shirts that fasten with buttons. Their shirts are a poly/cotton blend.

    Hats

    • In the winter, Amish men wear black felt hats. In the warmer months, Amish men wear straw hats.

    Colors

    • Strict Amish sects require Amish men to wear only black clothing. More progressive sects allow colored shirts.
