What Is Spybot Software?

"Spybot:Search and Destroy" is anti-spyware software. Spyware is a kind of program that infects your computer programs that spy on your web activity, change your web browser's homepage to a spam website, and cause pop-up windows to endlessly open on your desktop. "Spybot: Search and Destroy" does just that: It combs your computer for dangerous programs and allows you to then destroy them.

Type

Spybot software is freeware. This means it's free to download and use by anyone on the Internet (see Resources).

Updates

Spybot is able to identify the latest spyware threats by constantly offering updates of its dangerous program database through the "Check for updates" button.

Usage

Spybot scans through your entire computer after the "Check for problems" button is pushed. The scan will cause these problems to be listed and described for you.

Removing Spyware

Clicking on the "Fix selected problem" button will cause the program to delete the problems from your computer.

Additional Uses

Spybot also contains a file shredder, which will help you delete files securely. It also has a feature for checking on which programs automatically begin during your computer's start-up phase.
