What Do You Need to Apply for a Credit Card?

Applying for a new credit card can be done in person, online, on the telephone or through the mail. Filling out a credit application is normally a fairly standard process that requires basic pieces of personal information regardless of which company is issuing the credit card.

  1. Identifying Data

    • Applying for a credit card requires you to provide your full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, and home telephone number. This information is used to access your credit record and verify your identity.

    Address History

    • Your current and past residential addresses are usually required for a credit card application, especially if you have recently moved.

    Employment Data

    • You will be asked to provide the name of your employer, salary, length of time at the job and work telephone number. Sometimes you will need to list your supervisor's name.

    Bank Accounts

    • Many credit card issuers will ask during the application process if you have checking and savings accounts and if so, which financial institution holds your money.

    Signature

    • An electronic, handwritten or oral authorization is required for any credit card application and serves as a legal signature. This gives the lending institution consent to approve or deny your credit request.
