Many allergy sufferers find themselves desperate for relief from the runny nose, sneezing and watery eyes that plague them. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for the side effects of allergy medication to be almost as difficult to bear as the allergy symptoms themselves. There are natural ways to reduce or eliminate allergy symptoms. It is important to note that herbal and other types of allergy remedies still contain chemicals that affect the body. Consult your physician or allergist before attempting to treat your allergies with a natural remedy.

  1. Change Fans

    • One simple way to ease allergy suffering is to avoid bringing outdoor allergens inside by making sure that you do not use window fans to cool a room. Special allergy screens are also available and are designed to reduce the amount of pollen that can enter a home through the screen.

    Neti Pot

    • Neti pots are inexpensive devices that are used to flush the sinuses and have proven quite useful for treating allergies. A saline solution is provided, usually in powder form, and is mixed with warm water when ready for use. The solution is then used to rinse and clean the sinuses.

    Diet

    • Studies conducted in Germany have shown that people who eat a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids are less likely to experience allergy symptoms. Horseradish, hot sauces and hot peppers also help some people to keep their sinuses clear.

    Stinging Nettle

    • The stinging nettle plant works as a natural antihistamine without causing drowsiness or dry mouth. Stinging nettle caplets are available in many health food stores and pharmacies. Most people find relief of allergy symptoms when taking 300 milligrams of the herb a day.

    Butterbur

    • Butterbur is another plant that works as an antihistamine when taken orally. Unfortunately, butterbur grows in Europe and can be hard to find in other areas. Butterbur is in the same family as ragweed and may actually make some allergies worse. It is important to note that the effects of taking butterbur long term are not known.

    Vacuums

    • Many vacuum cleaners are now available with HEPPA filters and can trap allergens as you clean. A vacuum with potential to reduce allergens is especially helpful for those who are allergic to dust mites.
