Plantar warts are small growths that appear on the bottoms of the feet. The warts are caused by the HPV virus -- the same virus that can lead to cervical cancer in some women -- yet plantar warts are benign. Treatment for plantar warts will vary, depending on the severity of the problem. The medical team at the Mayo Clinic reports that some plantar warts do not require treatment and will disappear in time (see Resources).

    Cryotherapy

  1. Cryotherapy, commonly referred to as "freezing," is an effective, though painful, form of treatment for plantar warts. Several cryotherapy sessions may be required for the warts to be completely removed.
  2. Salicylic Acid

  3. Over-the-counter preparations that include salicylic acid can be used to treat plantar warts. Similar to the process of freezing, the acid kills the wart and the skin surrounding it.
  4. Taping and Filing

  5. Taping up your warts with duct tape and gently filing off the skin with a pumice stone may be the most cost-efficient treatment you'll find for plantar warts.
  6. Medications

  7. Your doctor may prescribe anti-viral medications or creams that will kill the HPV virus that is causing your warts.
  8. Surgery

  9. Painful plantar warts that inhibit walking and other normal activities may need to be treated through surgical means. Conventional surgery and laser surgery are both used to remove plantar warts.
