Pilates, which was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s, has become a very popular exercise technique and classes can be found at fitness centers all over the world. Pilates is popular for its mind/body approach. The goal of Pilates is to exercise with mindfulness, precision and control. Pilates can be done on special equipment or on a mat on the floor. Pilates offers techniques to both strengthen and tone the body as well as increase flexibility. Learn just some of the benefits of stretching with Pilates equipment.

    Better Posture

  1. When you are doing Pilates stretching exercises, you are focusing on engaging your core muscles. This includes your abdominal, waist and back muscles. Stretching and toning these muscles will give you the strength and flexibility to maintain good posture.
  2. Increased Awareness

  3. Pilates teaches you to move with control. While you are stretching, you are noticing any areas in your body that may be tight or tense. You then learn to move your body in class and everyday life in a way that releases tension from the body.
  4. Reduction in Chronic Back and Joint Pain

  5. If you have chronic pain that is due to muscle tension or deconditioning stretching in a mindful way will help. As you lengthen the muscles, pressure is taken off of the back and joints which will help to reduce your level of pain.
  6. Lower Your Risk of Injury

  7. Muscles that are more flexible are less likely to become injured during everyday activities and hobbies. Stretching with a Pilates machine with help to lengthen and tone your muscles making them less susceptible to injury.
  8. Pilates Machines Add Resistance

  9. Pilates machines have cables and springs that can provide resistance as you stretch. This can take you into a deeper stretch then you might be able to do on your own without equipment
