Medicinal Uses of Herbs & Plants

Herbs have been used for their healing properties for centuries. The Chinese studied medicinal herbs and still use many of the discoveries today. Medicinal herbs also work in conjunction with synthetic pharmaceuticals to promote less radical side affects.

  1. Herbal remedies and treatments should never be used without first consulting with a licensed physician. Herbs are natural drugs that can interact with other medications, causing severe reactions. Herbal remedies can also produce allergic reactions in some people.
  2. Identification

  3. Only those herbs and plants which have been properly identified should be used in medicinal remedies. Many plants closely resemble each other, and improper identification could lead to accidental poisoning.
  4. Upper Respiratory Problems

  5. Plants that help with with upper respiratory problems include fragrant water lily, horseradish, lemon balm, field sow-thistle and northern prickly ash.
  6. Anti-Cancer Plants

  7. There are several plants that act as anti-cancer agents. These include garlic, round-headed bush clover, spiderwort, flaxseed and heal-all.
  8. Colds

  9. At the first sign of a cold, the body's immune system can be strengthened by using echinacea. Other plants that can help are rattlesnake plantain and garlic. Solomon's seal and feverwort help to reduce fever and break up congestion.
  10. Considerations

  11. There are several ways to administer herbs for medicinal use. Teas, tinctures and salves are common. Health food stores offer powered, dried and liquid forms of herbs. Many common herbs are also available in pill form.
