Kombucha scoby tea drinks originated in China in 250 BC. The Chinese believed it was good for the stomach and helped digestion. When tea became less inexpensive in Europe, drinking Kombucha began there as well.

Some case reports suggest that Kombucha tea drinks actually harm the liver instead and cause allergic reactions in some people, but those studies are uncompleted as well.
