The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the health care industry will generate more new positions through 2016 than any other industry. A wide variety of career paths is available for those interested in pursuing a medical career.

  1. Mental Health and Therapy

    • A multitude of jobs is available in the mental health industry as well as in various types of therapy. These include positions such as counselors, social workers, social and human service assistants, occupational therapists, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, speech pathologists, and physical therapist assistants and aides.

    Medical Specialties

    • Specialties for nurses, physicians and surgeons include addiction medicine, allergy and immunology, anesthesiology, cardiovascular, critical care medicine, cytopathology, dermatology, emergency medicine, endocrinology, family practice, gastroenterology, genetics, geriatrics, gynecology and obstetrics, hematology, infectious disease, internal medicine, maxillofacial, oncology, neonatal, nephrology, neurology, nuclear medicine, nutrition, occupational medicine, ophthalmology, orthopedics, otorhinolaryngology, pathology, pediatrics, psychiatry, pulmonary, radiology, hematology and urology.

    Assistants and Technologists

    • Physician assistants, medical assistants, clinical laboratory technologists, cardiovascular technologists, sonographers, radiologic technologists, surgical technologists, nursing aides, orderlies and attendants assist medical doctors and nurses either directly or by performing diagnostic tests upon patients.

    Support Staff

    • Medical billing specialists or health information administrators, medical transcriptionists, billing specialists, bookkeepers, receptionists, office managers, secretaries and admission assistants perform support functions in or for medical offices and hospitals.

    Other Careers
