When Is it Time for a Divorce?

No matter how much you want your marriage to last, there are times when you know that it is time to let go. There is no definite line that has to be crossed but often many things add up to make you realize that you and your partner aren't going to be able to make it work, and that it is best to divorce. This is different for every couple but there are a few facts that you can't ignore that signal the end of a marriage.

  1. Violence

    • While you can both go to counseling and try to repair the rift, violence and abuse take a major toll on a marriage.

    No Love

    • When you can honestly look at the other person and realize that you don't love him anymore, that means that you are finished trying and any further attempts at mediation or counseling are a waste of time.

    Drug or Alcohol Addiction

    • This isn't saying that if your spouse has a problem and is seeking help that you should get a divorce. The time for a divorce is when the addict or alcoholic won't see that he has a problem and is destroying your family. As terrible as it feels to get a divorce from someone with an illness like this, many times it will serve as a wake-up call and he will seek help for the problem.

One of You Has Moved On

    • Some marriages survive affairs and some don't, but the key to knowing that the affair signals the end of the marriage is when the partner who is cheating is ready to move on with her life with the new person.

Not Willing to Work on Relationship

    • If either of you refuses to discuss the problems you have or talk to a counselor, then there is no fixing the problems and it is time to give it up and get a divorce. Some people are in denial and won't even admit that there are problems until they are alone and wonder why.
