What Is Paternalism?

There are several different types of paternalism. One is familial and sometimes involves non-relatives, one is political/governmental and one occurs in the healthcare industry. All ways that this word is used have similar connotations, but are exercised in different manners and affect the lives of people in separate ways.

  1. Paternalism

    • Paternalism is when an individual is interfered with against her will and without her permission, on the basis that it is in that person's own best interest. This happens regularly in family life, the health care profession and in government.

    Health Care

    • Paternalism is sometimes practiced in the medical industry.

Doctors sometimes withhold all of the details of a patient's condition from the patient themselves, and the patient's family. This is paternalistic behavior.

    Political / Governmental

    • Paternalistic laws regulate what people can do in their own homes.

There are many paternalistic laws enforced in most countries. Examples of paternalistic laws include drug laws and seat belt laws.

    Family Life

    • Relatives often interfere in the lives of other relatives under the guise that they know what is best for the individual that they are manipulating. Friends not related by blood sometimes may get involved paternalistically.

    Effects

    • Since paternalism is a removing of one's individual right to choose what is best for oneself, the effects are equal to any stripping of human rights and freedoms.
