Symptoms of Seafood Allergies
Being allergic to seafood is very common-- according to the Mayo Clinic, approximately two percent of all people living in the US are allergic to shellfish (see Resources). Allergy symptoms range from being mild in some people to life-threatening in others. Some people who have a seafood allergy may not even be able to sit close to the offending item without developing symptoms. As with all allergies, not everyone will develop the same set of symptoms.

Breaking out in hives, developing ezcema or severe itching of the skin is one group of symptoms consistent with shellfish allergies.
Breathing Difficulties

If you are allergic to seafood, you may have a hard time breathing. This symptom can range from wheezing to a closing-up of your airways.

Swelling often occurs in people who display seafood allergies. The lips, mouth and throat are commonly affected, along with a tingling feeling in those areas.
Abdominal Issues

Stomach pain, vomiting and nausea after ingesting seafood may indicate that you are allergic.
Lightheadedness

Symptoms of shellfish allergies include feeling lightheaded or dizzy. Fainting may occur in more severe cases.
