Nothing says home like the apple. It is a versatile fruit that can be cooked down into a sauce, baked into a pie or just eaten plain, right off the tree. There are so many varieties of apples that sometimes it is hard to choose which ones should be eaten fresh and which ones can be used in cooking. Does this Spark an idea?

    • This green apple is probably the favorite apple for making pies. The granny smith apple offers a tart bite with a firm texture.

    Golden Delicious

    • The golden delicious apple is another pie favorite. This apple has a sweet juicy flesh, which cooks down into a soft, mouth-watering taste. This is also the apple for making apple butter.

    Jonathon

    • Jonathon apples are excellent for cooking. The Jonathon can be used in pies, sauces or baked apples. The flavor is slightly tart. The flesh is firm and juicy. This apple does not turn to mush when cooked into applesauce.

    Winesap

    • The best applesauce starts with the best apples. The best fruit for the sauce pan is the winesap. The winesap apple should be used in salads and sauces. It does not perform as well as other apples when baked.

    McIntosh
