What Are Protons?

Everything in the world is made up of atoms, those tiny components of matter that compose both organic and inorganic things. Even atoms, though, are made up other components. One of these is the proton, which exists at the center of every atom, called the nucleus. These particles are extremely important and play a vital role in chemistry, physics, biology, and related scientific fields.

Charge

A proton is a positively charged subatomic particle. All protons have an electrical charge of +1.

Components

A proton is actually made up of even smaller components. They each contain two up quarks, one down quark and a series of gluons that creates a force that binds the quarks together.

Atomic Number

The number of protons in an atom equals the atomic number of that atom's element. Hydrogen, which contains only one, has an atomic number of 1.

Effects

The proton is the single most important part of an atom when determining its properties. The addition or subtraction of just one will completely change the atom.

Experimentation

Protons are stable when separated from the nucleus of an atom, which makes them popular for experimentation. Particle physicists often break them up to study smaller particles.
