Facts About Orange Trees

Orange trees are evergreen and come in a variety of sizes. Because of their year-round fullness, they could be considered as edible landscaping if you choose to to plant one in the yard. Orange trees do well in a tropical climate.

Hardiness

Orange trees are sensitive to the cold. Therefore they should be planted in the warmest, sunniest place in the yard or garden. They are drought resistant, but the fruit will suffer in size and quantity if it endures a long, dry period.

Location

Trees can be successfully grown in the tropical regions of the world, including the southern U.S., Central America and many parts of the Mediterranean and Asia.

Time Frame

Typically, grafted trees take up to two years before producing fruit. Orange blossoms begin in the spring, and the oranges are ready for harvest from October through January.

Size

Orange trees are generally short, compact trees. Tree heights range from 6 to 20 feet, depending on the variety.

Identification

The leaves on the orange tree are thick, shiny and oblong. The orange blossoms are white and extremely fragrant.

In many cases, the oranges from the previous year are still on the tree when the new blooms form.
