Diabetic Dessert Ideas

Although diabetics must carefully monitor their sugar intake because their bodies don't produce the insulin that is needed to convert that sugar into energy, they can still safely eat sweets modified for their diet. The American Diabetes Association recommends diabetics find ways of incorporating dessert into their diets so they don't deprive themselves and end up overindulging. Swapping out traditional dessert ingredients for sugar-free versions can make eating dessert possible even with diabetes. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Fruit Salad

    • Cutting up chunks of melon, pineapple, strawberries or any other fruits and dressing them with sugar-free yogurt makes for a healthy dessert option.

    Parfait

    • To incorporate chocolate into a diabetic diet, layer sugar-free chocolate pudding with sugar-free whipped topping in a glass for a diabetic-safe parfait.

    Gelatin

    • Gelatin desserts are low in carbohydrates and calories and can be topped with sugar-free whipped topping to satisfy a sweet tooth without raising blood sugar levels.

    Frozen Yogurt

    • For a frozen dessert, sugar-free frozen yogurt can be topped with melted unsweetened chocolate for a diabetic-safe twist on an ice cream sundae.

    Sugar Substitution

    • To make any dessert recipe suitable for diabetics, the sugar can be replaced with one-third the amount of sugar substitute such as Equal or Splenda.
