Effects of Uncontrolled Asthma on the Heart

Asthma that is untreated or uncontrolled can be dangerous for the health of the heart of the sufferer. There are many links to heart health and asthmatic conditions. This only compounds the urgency for asthma treatment to get this condition under control in order to prevent a fatality.

  1. Hypoxia

    • The heart may beat harder and faster to attempt to supply the body with more oxygenated blood when there is a reduction of properly oxygenated blood entering the heart.

    Pulmonary Hypertension

    • Uncontrolled asthma may cause the arteries to the lungs to have high blood pressure. This is what pulmonary hypertension is and it is different from the typical blood pressure readings that are generally checked.

    Asphyxia

    • A severe oxygen deficiency can cause asphyxia, an actual stopping of the heartbeat.

    Pulmonary Edema

    • Asthma that is untreated may even cause pulmonary edema, which is a fluid build-up in the lungs, which then also causes heart failure.

    Heart Attack

    • The Brody School of Medicine researchers found a negative affect upon recovery from a heart attack to be linked to those with asthma, which indicates that untreated asthma affects the heart, whereas previously it was thought the heart was only affected by medicines taken by asthma sufferers.
