Hot Tub Health Effects

If you are feeling stressed or your muscles are sore and achy, a hot tub may sound inviting. The warm water combined with pressure from the jets can be very soothing. Many health clubs and spas have hot tubs; there are models you can buy for home use, and there are even bathtubs that come with jets to simulate a hot tub. While there are some definite benefits to using a hot tub, there are also some precautions to keep in mind.

    Muscular Benefits

  1. According to the Arthritis Foundation, warm water, like any kind of heat, increases blood flow to affected areas. This helps to decrease inflammation, remove lactic acid and relax tight and sore muscles.
  2. Respiratory Benefits

  3. Sitting in warm water can hep your lungs. Your respiratory muscles are strengthened as you breathe against the resistance of the water. This also encourages the release of lung gases and increases oxygen blood gases within the lungs.
  4. Pain Reduction

  5. Soaking in a hot tub takes pressure off of painful joints and muscles. The buoyancy of the water displaces your body weight so your joints can fully relax.
  6. Psychological Benefits

  7. The sound of gently moving water can be very meditative and relaxing. As you escape from everyday worries and relax in the hot tub, your heart rate, rate of breathing and nervous-system activity slow down, allowing your body and mind to become calm.
  8. Contraindications

  9. Hot tubs should not be used if you have heart disease or high blood pressure, are pregnant or have certain respiratory conditions. If you have any medical issues, check with your health-care provider first.
  10. Precautions

  11. Check the manufacturer's instructions on cleaning and maintaining a proper balance of chemicals in your hot tub. If you are using a public hot tub, ask for a copy of their maintenance records to ensure it is being cleaned and properly maintained. Many conditions can be caused by using an improperly maintained hot tub at home and in public places.
