Types of Blood Tests

As part of a routine physical or when necessity dictates, your physician may order a blood test. According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, "Blood tests help doctors check for certain diseases and conditions. They also help check the function of your organs and show how well treatments are working." There are a variety of blood tests and below are some types of blood tests that your doctor may order on your next visit.

Basic Metabolic Panel

Basic metabolic panel (BMP), also known as a blood chemistry test, measures chemicals found in the blood. Primarily performed on the part of the blood called plasma, the BMP tests for chemicals in the blood, such as calcium, glucose, sodium and potassium.

Blood Culture

Doctors use a blood culture to detect and treat germs in the blood stream, such as bacteria or fungi.

Complete Blood Count

This test measures parts of the blood, such as the hematocrit, hemoglobin and platelets for diseases and disorders.

Enzyme Test

To detect diseases and disorders in the body's organs, such as the heart and the liver, your doctor may order an enzyme test.

Heart Disease Risk-Related Tests

Some of the tests your physician may order to determine if you at risk for heart disease include a lipoprotein panel and a C-reactive protein test.
