Theater Manager Job Description
A lot goes on behind the scenes in any live theater production, and the person who's responsible for seeing that everything goes off without a hitch is the theater manager. It's a fun and challenging job for someone who wants to work in the performing arts but doesn't necessarily want to be an actual performer.

Depending on the size of the theater, the manager's job may include overseeing set construction, procuring props and costumes, scheduling rehearsals, handling accounting and payroll responsibilities, overseeing building security, overseeing box office personnel and ensuring proper safety rules are observed.
Community Liaison

Many theater managers participate in the design of outreach programs, backstage tours, lecture series and fundraising events that either showcase the current production or bring in guest artists and entertainers.

A theater manager may be the go-to person for arranging photo shoots, coordinating cast and director interviews, and providing press releases on upcoming productions.
Touring Productions

The theater manager of a touring repertory company acts as the liaison for coordinating hotel accommodations, airport and ground transportation, restaurant reservations and any other special needs of the show's stars.
Accounting for Strays

The theater manager is in charge of the production call board and/or time clock wherein performers and technicians report their arrival at the theater prior to performance. It's the manager's responsibility to not only track down the latecomers, but also to remind them of house rules regarding punctuality.
Lights Out

The theater manager is usually the last to leave the premises after making sure everything has been properly stored, turned off and locked up. In some cases, this also involves overseeing the dismantling of sets if the space is going to be used for a different purpose the next day.
