A pennant in baseball is a league championship won by a team. The word "pennant" can also refer to a symbolic flag that celebrates that league title. Pennants are also smallish, triangular-shaped flags that feature a baseball team's colors and logo--they are often hung up on the walls of fans' homes.

    Most pennants

  1. The New York Yankees have won a total of 39 American League pennants, which is far and away the most by a team in either league as of 2009. New York won five consecutive pennants on two separate occasions, winning five in a row from 1949 through 1953 and again from 1960 through 1964.
  2. Second most

  3. The St. Louis Cardinals hold the distinction of having won 17 National League pennants, the most in that circuit and the second most overall as of 2009. St. Louis won three in a row from 1942 through 1944.
  4. No pennants

  5. Of the 30 Major League Baseball teams, less than a handful have never won a pennant up to 2009. This short list includes the Washington Nationals, the Texas Rangers, and the Seattle Mariners.
  6. Actual pennants

  7. The pennants that can be displayed by fans are usually made of felt blend material and have a sewn sleeve on the long end through which a stick may be inserted. These pennants are sold at ballparks, souvenir stores and online.
  8. Stadium pennants

  9. When a team does win a title, it is entitled to fly a pennant flag over the home stadium. These pennants will have the team colors as well as the year that the club won the championship.
