What Is Modern Architecture?

Modern architecture developed between the late 1800s and the mid 1960s. The time line is approximate depending on which expert relates the history. Genius minds such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and I.M. Pei used newly available building materials to design innovative structures in Europe and the United States.

  1. Beauty and Light

    • Modern architecture is not only different from earlier styles, but often differs radically from building to building within its own category. Most structures have a light, almost translucent look, and some appear to be suspended in the air around them.

    Prominent Architects

    • Santiago Calatrava is famous for his many bridge designs. The first of a planned trio to cross the Trinity River in Dallas, Texas, is under construction. Frank Gehry is another successful architect. Among his many accomplishments is the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain (see Resources).

    Famous Modern Structures

    • Chicago is considered to be the birthplace of modern architecture, with buildings designed by such notables as Louis Sullivan.

    Sydney Opera House

    • Just as Sydney, Australia, is known for the Sydney Opera House, most major cities have an outstanding example of modern architecture that serve as both tourist attractions and something the citizens can be proud of.

    Formal Education

    • A student needs a five-year degree from an accredited university plus an internship or apprenticeship under guidance of a licensed architect. After that, he must test to be licensed.
