Prednisone Side Effects in Canines

Prednisone is an anti-inflammatory medicine. It is a synthetic corticosteroid used in human and animal ailments. Veterinarians prescribe prednisone for dogs suffering from trauma, allergic reactions, respiratory problems, and other inflammations. It is available by injection, tablet and ointment. Though effective, prednisone does have some side effects that should be reported to the veterinarian.

Thirst

The steroid-type effects of prednisone can stimulate excessive thirst and urination, resulting in urinary tract infections.

Hunger

The dog may have an obsessive desire to eat and can gain excess weight while taking prednisone.

Diarrhea

Prednisone can upset the stomach and cause ulcers. Watch for diarrhea and especially blood-tinged or black, tarry stools that may indicate internal bleeding.

Behavior

Watch for excitability and irritability as a side effect of prednisone due to the hormone and steroid effects.

Panting

Prednisone may cause excessive panting by the dog. If the dog has labored breathing, the veterinarian may reduce the drug dosage or change to another medication with fewer respiratory effects.

Precautions

Do not use prednisone with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, diuretics or other drugs without consulting the veterinarian.
