What Is a Production Coordinator?

Any creative business endeavor could benefit from a production coordinator. A strong background in management, design or film is usually required. Good communications and organizational skills are also very important. This person is the logistical manager of creative materials and the communicator between all persons in the crew. The production coordinator is invaluable to a television or movie set. His work starts early in the creative process and ends later than most of the other crew positions.

  1. Information Control

    • The production coordinator compiles and disseminates most of the pertinent production information. Necessary documentation such as schedules, budget charts and contact information is processed and recorded. A proper knowledge of spreadsheet software is prerequisite for this task.

    Communications Hub

    • The production coordinator is a vital communications link to the film crew. To insure a smooth production, the coordinator must maintain a dialog between the director, production assistants and other staff members.

    Quality Assurance

    • A good production coordinator has a general knowledge of all aspects of production. She acts as a filter among the entire production team, insuring that graphics, scripts, invoices and videos are reviewed and corrected if changes are necessary.

    Outside Liason

    • The person responsible for getting location agreements and signed release forms is the production coordinator. This involves meeting with vendors, city officials and business professionals outside of the production field.

    Crew Travel

    • A production coordinator must work with travel and booking agents in order to transport cast, crew and equipment to filming locations. This could involve several transport services on both ground and air.

    Money Management

    • Most movie productions are spending money as each frame of film rolls through the camera. The production coordinator documents expenditures and works closely with the production accountant to properly monitor expenses.
