Prevacid is the brand name for the prescription drug lansoprazole. This drug is used to treat a number of stomach and intestinal ailments, including ulcers and esophagitis. Prevacid works by decreasing stomach acid. While Prevacid has been extensively tested, as with all prescriptions drugs, known and unknown side effects may occur in individual patients.   1. Allergic Reactions

    • Prevacid has caused allergic reactions in some patients, so it is important to inform your doctor of any known allergies before taking this drug.

    Symptoms

    • Prevacid has been reported to cause such reactions as hives, swelling of the facial features or throat, and difficulty in breathing.

    Common Side Effects

    • Commonly reported side effects include headache, nausea, diarrhea and constipation.

    Rare Side Effects

    • Rare, but potential, side effects may include chest pain, fainting, depression, nose bleed, migraine headaches, dry eye and others.

    Nursing Mothers

    • It is not known whether Prevacid passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby, so nursing mothers should consult their doctors before taking the drug.
