What Are Lumens?

The measurement of light is often referred to as lumens, lux and watts. There is a difference between each of these terms. All refer to a specific way light is produced or measured.

  1. Measurement

    • Lumens are the measurement units of "luminous flux." This is the total number of packets of light that is created by a source of light.

    Lux

    • A lux is the unit of illumination. One lux equals 1 lumen per square meter.

    Purpose

    • A lux is used to tell how many lumens are needed to light a given area.

    Differences

    • A lux accounts for the area in which the lumens are spread. If 2,000 lumens are spread over 1 square meter, it lights that area up with an illumination of 2,000 lux.

    Watts

    • Watts, or the wattage of light, is the power that is used to operate the light source. Lumens refer to the brightness of that source.

    Fun Fact

    • According to brillianz.co.uk, sunlight on average ranges from 32,000 to 100,000 lux, or lumens per square meter (see Resources).
