What Are the Functions of a Research Analyst?

A research analyst has many duties, which require both research and analysis of the information found. The goal of a research analyst is to improve decision making and problem solving within an organization to improve operation and ultimately, its bottom line.

  1. Research

    • Research analysts must be well versed in research methods that allow them to uncover and process large amounts of information in short periods. Research resources may include books, the Internet, company records, public records and the like.

    Analysis

    • Research analysts analyze raw data about aspects of a company's operations--for example, people or money management or budget allocation--and evaluate how the company could apply the data to improve them.

    Forecasting

    • Research analysts frequently use their skills to predict a company's financial future using forecasting or other mathematical models.

    Strategizing

    • Research analysts use the information they find through research to devise new marketing strategies for the company, product or organization.

    Problem Solving

    • Some research analysts may solve problems through research, finding the best possible alternative to a particular situation or problem within the organization.
