Spastic Colon Symptoms

Spastic colon syndrome is most often referred to as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). A spastic colon contracts more often than a normally functioning colon. These spasms cause waste to travel too quickly through the intestines, resulting in diarrhea. There is no cure for a spastic colon; however, dietary changes may alleviate some symptoms, and over-the-counter medications such as Imodium may reduce the severity of diarrhea. The following symptoms may occur as a result of spastic colon syndrome.

  1. Frequent Diarrhea

    • Diarrhea may be unpredictable and severe enough to prevent an affected individual from enjoying life to the fullest.

    Stomach Cramping

    • An individual with a spastic colon may experience bothersome stomach cramping.

    Stomach Pain

    • Spasms in the colon and intestines may cause pain in the abdominal region.

    Abdominal Bloating and Gas

    • When the digestive system is not working properly, an individual may feel perpetually bloated from excess gas.

    Depression

    • When spastic colon syndrome is severe, affected individuals may develop depression because of the inconvenient symptoms that inhibit life enjoyment.
