What Are Anal Warts?

Anal warts, also known as condyloma acuminata, are contagious warts spread by sexual contact. They are generally caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). These warts can vary from the size of a needle head to larger growths that are shaped like a cauliflower. Most people with anal warts will develop one to 10 warts around the rectum. Anal warts are one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the United States.

  1. Identification

    • Anal warts can vary in size and color. They can be yellow, brown or pink. Most people are unaware that they have developed these warts.

    Causes

    • Though HPV is the most common cause of anal warts, risk behaviors such as smoking, multiple sexual partners, anal intercourse and oral contraceptives also increase the risk of developing anal warts.

    Symptoms

    • Anal warts typically appear in small clusters around the anus. Sometimes they will be itchy, but generally there will be no symptoms other than the outward appearance of the bumps.

    Treatment

    • Doctors can treat anal warts with an assortment of creams and solutions. Sometimes laser surgery or cauterization is necessary. It is also possible that anal warts will resolve on their own.

    Vaccine

    • Gardasil is a vaccine that prevents HPV. The vaccine is currently only available for women, but a variation for men is being tested.
