Facts About the Mustang Saleen

The Troy, Michigan-based Saleen, Inc., a sports car and parts manufacturing company founded by Steven Saleen, developed a series of limited edition Mustangs that featured high-performance engines and custom body work. Most Saleens are associated with racing, such as the 2007 Saleen/Parnell Jones S302 Mustang and the Ford GT race car.

First Mustangs

Saleen build three modified Mustangs in late 1983, with modest changes to the body and interior, and a stiffened suspension for nimble handling.

Triple Threat

At the American 24 Hours of Mosport race in 1988, Saleen Mustangs finished in first, second and third place, making it the first triple win finish for Ford since its legendary consecutive 1-2-3 placings at the 24-hour LaMans more than 20 years before.

Hatchback Mustangs

In 1989, 161 Mustang hatchbacks were customized with extensive engine and drivetrain changes, while the rear seats were removed and the body outfitted with distinctive yellow and gray chevron stripes.

S281

The low-cost Mustang S281 debuted in 1996 with a 215-horsepower, 4.6-liter engine. It attracted a wider customer base as the "poor man's" Saleen.

Scenic Roof

Saleen contractor Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters built "scenic" glass roof panels for the SC, 3-Valve and Extreme limited editions Mustangs in 2006.

Homage

Only 500 Saleen/Parnelli Jones S302 Mustangs were built in 2007 to pay homage to Parnelli's 1970s Boss 302. These had a 302-cubic-inch V-8 generating 400 horsepower and featured the retro-style "Shaker" hood, custom wheels and window louvers.
